Welcome to Bologna

Bologna, host city of EurBee11, 11th European Conference of Apidology

Bologna, the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, is one of Italy’s most vibrant and welcoming cities, renowned for its rich academic tradition, cultural heritage, and high quality of life. Located in the heart of northern Italy, Bologna is easily accessible from major European cities and offers an ideal setting for an international scientific conference.

Home to the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna, founded in 1088 and widely regarded as the oldest university in the Western world, the city has long been a centre of excellence for research, education, and scientific exchange. This strong academic identity, combined with an open and international outlook, makes Bologna a natural host for EurBee 2026.

The historic city centre is compact, walkable, and bike-friendly, characterized by more than 40 kilometres of iconic porticoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a well-preserved medieval urban fabric, visit over 50 museums and cultural institutions, and enjoy lively public spaces that encourage social interaction and informal networking.

Bologna is also internationally celebrated for its culinary tradition, considered one of the finest in Italy. From traditional trattorias to contemporary dining experiences, the city offers a wide range of gastronomic options that will enrich the overall conference experience.

With its combination of scientific excellence, cultural richness, and welcoming atmosphere, Bologna provides an inspiring backdrop for EurBee 2026, fostering dialogue, collaboration, and meaningful connections among researchers from across Europe and beyond.

What to Visit in Bologna

Bologna’s historic centre is compact and easily walkable, allowing conference participants to explore many of the city’s highlights even in short breaks or after conference sessions.

The Historic Heart of the City

The symbolic centre of Bologna is Piazza Maggiore, surrounded by some of the city’s most important landmarks, including Basilica di San Petronio, one of the largest brick churches in the world, and Palazzo d’Accursio, the historic seat of the city government. This area is an ideal starting point to experience Bologna’s atmosphere and architectural heritage.

A short walk away are the Two Towers (Le Due Torri)—Asinelli and Garisenda—icons of the medieval city. Visitors willing to climb the Asinelli Tower are rewarded with a panoramic view over Bologna’s red rooftops.

Porticoes and City Walks

Bologna is famous for its porticoes, which extend for more than 40 kilometres and have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking under the porticoes along Via Zamboni, Strada Maggiore, or Via Indipendenza offers a unique way to discover the city while staying protected from sun or rain.

Museums and Culture

For those interested in culture and history, Bologna offers a rich selection of museums within the city centre. Highlights include the Archaeological Museum, located near Piazza Maggiore, and MAMbo – Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, which showcases modern and contemporary art. Smaller museums and historic libraries provide additional opportunities for short, focused visits.

This area is particularly lively in the evening and well suited for informal social moments.

A Short Escape: San Luca

For a brief break from the city, participants can reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, located on a hill just outside the historic centre. It is connected to the city by the world’s longest portico and offers scenic views over Bologna and the surrounding landscape.
